There are  a lot of   Internet  sources available to  get   assistance  with mathematics .   Some will  provide homework help , some help with  the teaching  of  math  topics , and others can   produce worksheets and other materials for students to use online .   Also, there are a variety of prices  for these services.  Some are  of no cost  while others may charge rates  that can  range between  one dollar  to  hundreds of  dollars for a subscription service .  

So, how  do I find  a  service that is right ?   Begin  by doing internet searches for  topics  like:  geometry tutoring  , virtual math lab , and  algebra tutoring .

Have some sort of  plan  so you know what  to look for  for.  For example: Do you need occasional math help?  Will you use online math help enough to warrant  a subscription with a service?  Do you want to see  mathematics  lessons, direct tutoring, or homework help ? When you find  a list of services that sound like  they could  be of help    , go to their website’s “about us” and the “frequently asked questions” (FAQ) page.  If you do not see  the  information that you  require , contact them by using a “Contact Us”  page or button  .  I find that the length of time it takes for a  copmany  to respond to a question  tells me a lot about  a  company.  Also, what  types  of payment do they  accept  ?  Do you pay up-front, or pay as you go? 

After you have found a  company  that will meet your  requirements  , give them a try .  If you find that the service doesn’t meet your needs , then stop using the service.  Some companies  will  pressure people to get and keep customers.  The conclusion  is that if the service isn’t helping you to succeed in math, then find someone else .

Remeber that a  good   service is  concerned about helping you with   math .  There are  a lot of   great  services  online  .  Do  some  research and find the one that works for you!



Will college get me a good job?

The value of  a university   degree  is not what it  was in the past  .  When we speak about  the “value”  of  a diploma , we are  speaking  about the  earnings you will receive on your investment . Certain  degrees  of study can  get students in to  high paying jobs, but  some others  can  give  students with little chance of employment that will  be worth  the cost of the degree they have earned .   Studies  in  Engineering/Science  ,  Information Technology  , and other in demand degrees can earn  students  an excellent  anual salary  and possibilities for  future advancement  .  But there are  some   studies  that  can  leave you either  with out a job  or  get you into a job  with a salary that is  much  lower than will make a degree worth the expense .

In today’s high school education environment , being accepted to  a university  is the ultimate  ending  . There are even television  ads   that show  the excitement of  future college students  being “accepted” to college.  Unfortunately, colleges are accepting students that are not  able to handle the  the rigor of a college education.  Universities are making a fortune  remedial  classes  for  new  freshmen that are not ready for  university  level  courses  .  It used to be that if someone had been out of school for a while and working in the job force for many years, those remedial courses would be offered to help refresh his or her skills so that he or she could  goto  the  college   environment  .  Now,  freshmen  right out of high school need remedial  classes  .  These “remedial” courses cost the same per credit hour as regular college classes.  They are often taught by  a teacher’s assistant  or graduate students  instead of  normal  university faculty.  Also, these  classes  usually do not count towards a college degree.  The courses  will  increase the overall cost of the degree and therefore reduce the “value” of the degree earned.  Here is an example.  Let’s say I go to a  university  with a cost of  $450 per  university  credit.  Most college classes will earn you three credits.  Now  say  I need  this list of  remedial courses :  Beginning Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, and Intro to Writing. The first semester I will  need to take  Beginning Algebra and Intro to Writing.  So I have  scheduled  6 credits of remedial courses and now I need 3 more class (15 credits total) to  finish  my schedule.  I look at the  courses  I need for my first freshmen semester .  I notice that there are only 2  additional  classes I can  enroll in  because the other  courses  have a “concurrent” course requirement.  A concurrent course requirement means that I have to either be enrolled in the class or have already taken  it before.  I  am not allowed to  enroll in English 101 because I have to pass the  remedial English  class  first.  So,  I  can only take 6 more credits for a total of 12 credit hours.  I am now 9 credits behind (six for the remedial courses and three because of the concurrent requirement).  This means that I will have to go to school for  an extra semester to recover those missing credits.   It  is not only tuition I have to pay for in the extra semester .  I also have  to pay student fees, technology usage fees, parking fees, and  other types of fees depending on the  university    .  These fees can  run  thousands of dollars, depending on the college .   Now add to this the $4,500 in tuition I  still have  to pay for the recovery of missed credits.   I finally  graduate from college and I may or may not  be hired  .  Unfortunately my student loans start coming due the day I graduate. 

So, what should this mean for  freshmen  ready to enter college, post-secondary education, or the job  market  ?  Do your research.  Make sure that you are not wasting your time and money  earning  a degree that will not help you get into a carreer that will  make  the amount of income  you expect to  earn  .  I am not saying that you shouldn’t go to college to get a degree that is not in high demand or does not pay well (compared to other degrees).   Just  make sure you understand  what you are getting into .  After graduating, if you will have a starting salary of $32,000 per year, you  may not  want to go to a college that costs $40,000 per year.  Your student loan payments  can  be as much as a home mortgage (4 x $40,000 = $160,000).  If you really want  to  take  remedial classes so you can attend regular college  courses  , use a less expensive resource like community colleges or tutoring.  Once these courses are completed, you can move on to the university .  You probably saved your self $4000 to $5000.

Texting At School Can Be A Problem

With today’s use of  mobile devises  ,  students are  sometimes   concentrate  on who is texting them instead of focusing on the task at hand.  A lot of  junior and senior high school students  brag about  sending tens of thousands of texts per month.  While students are  sending and receiving texts  , they are not giving their  attention to a  topic  being taught or  instructions from   an  instructor  .  I am not  trying to say that  texting is bad  .  I use texting myself.  What I am  trying to say  is that we  should  to  instruct  our children  when it is ok to text   and  time  to focus on current tasks .  Even though children will  insist that they can multi-task  ,  most of them  can not. 

How can a parent know if  his/her  child is  texting excessively during math class ?   Many mobile phone carriers can give you a list of dates and times when text messages were sent .  Just compare the list  with  your child’s bell schedule.  It will be easy to tell if your child is texting during class , or waiting to text  at lunch or between classes  .

 What  can  parents do  about  misusing  texting?  First of all , parents have to  decide  that texting is not  permitted  at school (unless there is an emergency).  Also, there needs to be an  understanding  on what constitutes an emergency.  I have  seen  parents text their child in an algebra class to  find out  what  he/she wants for  for dinner (I am not joking ).  This is not an  acceptable  text during class.  Also, if you need to text about a non-emergency, have your  student   reply  at  the proper  time.  For children that refuse to stop texting during  class  , your  cell phone carrier may have a  way  that  will allow you to  determine  times when texting (receiving and/or sending) is  active  on your student’s  phone. It is better to help your child understand  where and when  texting can take place .  Otherwise, schools will have to take matters into their hands  .  This  could  include signal-blocking  wall coatings  that will block  cell phone signals from entering or leaving the  building  .  As parents, let’s get this issue controlled   so that  drastic measures will not need to be taken .

Can we Trust Education’s Action Research?

In  standard  research, there are  several   groups used .  Groups   are made up of the same type of  people  (age, gender, similar conditions, etc.). One group is called the “Control Group.”  The control group does not recieve the “condition” of the study. There needs to be many  members  in each group for the best possible results (hundreds of thousands). This is  considered  a large sample size. Also, each group should have the same number of  people .  Each group  participates in  a different side of the  study  being conducted.  For example, if a pharmaceutical company tests a new  medication  , they have one group that  receives  the drug and another group that  does not   receive  the drug .  The group that  does not  take the drug will instead take a placebo (sugar pill)  that will not have an  effect on the condition being  researched  . Also, all other conditions for each group are kept  the same  (except for the drug for the condition studied). Example,   sleep, exercise, diet,  etc.  To help justify  the results , the  researcher  assigning the groups, the researcher(s)  administering the study , and the person who interprets the results are all different people.  The  researchers of  the study do not  talk about the  research    until all of the  data  are completed .  This keeps a person’s opinion or bias out of the study.  This is called a “Double Blind” study.  Since the other conditions are nearly identical , the only  condition  that is different between the groups is the  factor  (drug) being tested .  Any  information  should then be a result of the one  condition  that was  researched  in the  various  groups.

Educators and education researches use a different   style  of research.  They use a style  called “Action Research.”  What is Action Research?  Action Research is a type of research that uses observation as part of the study .  There are no control groups, the person  running  the research is the same person that analyzes the  data , and there is only a small sample size, sometimes as  little  as twenty  children  .  Since there is no control group, and one person controls the entire  research  , there is no “Double Blind” standard used in Action Research.

So, why would they use Action Research?  A concern in educational research is that it is improper  to give something of value to one student and withhold it from another, even if the thing of “value” has not been determined to be of value.  Also, society isn’t open  to the idea of experimenting on children . It is very difficult to have a large research  group.  Usually research can only be  completed  at the classroom, school, or at most the district level.  This results in small sample sizes.

What are the possible  discrepancies with the  data  from action research?  When Action Research is being conducted ,  the first thing that happens is a hypothesis is stated  (What a researcher believes the condition  researched  will do).  Second, the educator applies the condition to the  research  (gives the material, etc. to his or her students) .  Finally, the researcher  compiles  the  data  .  Someone  using  this type of research needs to be very careful not to skew the  data  towards the hypothesis.  This is easy for someone to do without even knowing he or she  being aware of  it.  For example, let’s say you are teaching with a new  idea  because you believe the new method will help students understand a concept  more clearly  .  You see  that one of your the students prefers to use a method you  used  earlier in the year.  You then say to the student, “This “other” method is better and easier.”  The researcher just  changed  the results by  expressing to  a student that the new method is better.  The student uses the new method because your comment lets the student know that, that is the method he or she  should  use.  The problem is that the student understands the old way better and you just pushed a result towards your hypothesis.  Plus, students may use the old way on the assesment but make it  appear to be  like the new  method  .  This is so the student doesn’t disapointed theteacher.

Is Action Research a completely  negative  thing?  No, but when  using  Action Research, make sure you work hard to make the study as non-biased as possible.  When reading the results of a study that used Action Research, you need to understand that there is no  definitive  proof that the  research  is valid.  A lot of Action Research is  mostly  common sense.  So use your common sense and take it with a grain of salt.  I  can’t  tell you the number of times I have been told to use  researched strategies  in my classroom that will raise state test scores.  It always starts off with, “Research shows…”  I  teach  the condition of the  research because I am told to do so.  I follow the study’s guidelines and practices  . The  condition  does not  increase  our state test scores . I then  consult  the research and find out that the  parameters  of the study are specific and do not apply to our school’s  demographics  . The  research  was  used   out of state, so the two state  assesments  may not  be  comparable.
