Branding may draw specific investments to the city
Kolkata should be promoted as a “niche city” specialising in IT rather than a traditional IT hub, Ambarish Dasgupta, Partner and Head of Management Consulting, KPMG and Vice President, The Bengal Chamber of Commerce Industry (BCCI) said here on Friday.
A niche city would mean promoting a select skill-set, just as Silicon Valley in the USA is known to be the home of technology companies and start-ups.
According to Dasgupta, promoting niche skill sets such as data analytics or promoting products companies and developing the ecosystem might help “create some relevance”. This would draw in more investments from specific companies.
“Ideally, we cannot keep promoting Kolkata as a traditional IT city. It won’t work. We need to brand it as a niche city, and develop such an ecosystem that will draw specialised investments,” he told reporters on the sidelines of an IT conclave organised by BCCI.
