New pub and eatery helps fill South Bay niche

About three years ago, four people with restaurant experience all had their eyes on a new building in the 3300 block of South Bay Road.

And all of them had the same idea: to open a restaurant and serve the underserved community along South Bay Road, northeast of downtown Olympia.

The result is that Keith Lampard and Mark Christensen — the former owners of Darby’s Cafe — and Eric Dickerson and Suvantha Dickerson — the owners of South Bay Dickerson’s BBQ on Legion Way in Olympia — had a meeting of the minds and decided to go into business together.

The result was South Bay Pub Eatery, which opened in June 2011.

Dickerson said all he had to do was turn on the open sign and soon the place was packed.

“It fills a huge niche,” he said, adding that it has brought the South Bay community together.

As the name suggests, the business is a restaurant and a pub, which serves breakfast on the weekends, plus lunch and dinner throughout the week. It also has wine and beer on tap as well as cocktails. Tim Smiedala is the pub manager and the business employs 10.

Co-owner Keith Lampard said the focus of the menu is on meat-and-potato-type food. Specials include a $16 prime rib dinner on Saturdays and a rotating home-style dinner on Thursdays and Fridays. The regular menu is typical pub food, serving burgers, sandwiches and wraps.

Prices for those items range from $8 to $12, according to the menu.

“It’s a great place; it’s local and it’s accessible,” said customer Chris Ward, who usually goes for breakfast and once in a while to watch a sporting event.

Ward, too, has noticed the effect the business has had on the community.

“When it first opened, people saw people that they hadn’t seen in 20 years,” he said.

Shipwreck Beads co-owner Glenn Vincent is a regular, too, describing it as not too big and not too small, but comfortable and cozy.

He called it a neighborhood place to gather.

“So many of us have really gotten to know each other,” Vincent said.

Vincent also praised the food and a summer car show that the business hosts.
