Move over match.com, a slew of niche dating sites exist — from mulletpassions.com, for those unique trendsetters who sport a mullet, to datemypet.com for animal lovers.
Farmersonly.com is another targeted site that hooks up country folk. The tag line is “City folks just don’t get it.”
But dating expert Tracey Steinberg says she’s not sure these are the ideal places to look for love.
“I recommend that singles choose the bigger sites, you’re better off going fishing in the ocean than someone’s backyard pond,” she says “Typically these niche sites aren’t that popular and don’t have a lot of members.”
She may be right. There were about 7,200 members on farmers.com Monday afternoon vs. a million on dating megasite OkCupid.
In the food genre, there’s a site for those with a passion for hot sauce and a place for gluten-free singles to meet, a site that Steinberg says isn’t necessary for finding love.
“I’m gluten free and my husband isn’t, but we make it work,” she says.
With the legalization of marijuana in Washington State and Colorado, there was a site for pot smokers to find love called 420singles.com, but that site has since been shut down.
