DEERFIELD — When it came to choosing a career, Dan Nye really followed in his father, Marty’s footsteps. Like his dad, Nye became an accountant.

The now 47-year-old Certified Public Accountant began working for his dad’s accounting business when he was 16. He said accounting and taxes came natural to him, and he always felt comfortable doing the work.

“I learned a lot from my father,” said Nye, who holds a BS in accounting from Northern Illinois. “I worked with him closely. He was very methodical and systematic and on the cutting edge, always having the newest accounting software.”

Nye is currently the owner and sole accountant for his Deerfield-based accounting firm, Nye Nye, a company he started in 2009 that specializes in small businesses.

In the past, Nye has worked for his father’s firm, and has been a staff accountant for a medium-sized accounting firm, as well as an in house accountant for a large corporation. He said those positions gave him valuable experience, but he decided to go solo because he felt like small businesses were paying excessive fees to the firms, and he was doing all the work.

“I felt like I could provide a lower cost alternative, while giving the same quality one would get at a larger firm, with more personal service,” said Nye, who lives in Deerfield with his wife, Laura and their two children.

Another advantage Nye offers is that he visits his clients’ businesses on a monthly basis to answer questions, offer advice and see how their businesses are changing and growing.

“When it comes to small businesses, their company is their baby,” Nye said. “They have to focus on what they need to do: their specialty. What I do is take over the accounting and tax part of it so they can run their business and not worry about this end of it.”

Nye Nye prepares annual income tax returns, sales and payroll taxes, profit and loss statements and other financial documents for individuals and small businesses with up to about 80 employees. The company also provides QuickBooks training, tax and retirement planning services, IRS advice and support, and general overall business advice.

Belinda Carucci is a teacher by trade and the owner of Bucktown’s Chicago Teacher Store. Nye has been her accountant for five years.

“I was working with a big firm and they treated me like small potatoes and Dan treats me like a big potato,” said Carucci, who opened Chicago Teacher Store 16 years ago. “He visits my store regularly and I always feel he’s knowledgeable about small business law and taxes.”

“Dan is a diligent, people-friendly accountant,” said Marty Nye, who still works full time as an accountant. “When he worked at our firm, he was very well respected by everyone, and handled all the clients’ needs, answered their questions and gave them suggestions on how to improve their businesses.”

“My dad and I talk every day,” Nye said, “He and I are always talking client strategy.”

Marty describes the accounting profession as a challenge, but said his son is more than capable in his career.

“With all the tax changes constantly, you need someone who is hands on, and who is willing to bend over backwards and that’s Dan,” he said. “Many times, my clients will say, ‘Why don’t you send Dan out instead of you?’”

“Dan is like my big brother who is watching over my accounting,” Carucci said.
