May Deal Roundup: Niche ecommerce stakes its claim

After a brief pause in April, venture capital investors returned to the ecommerce sector with renewed vigour last month, snapping up seven deals worth $36.5 million. Overall, venture capitalists invested $81.3 million across 25 deals during the month of May.

Trend Watch: Niche ecommerce startups, or etailing companies that focus on a specific segment or vertical, dominate deal activity during the month. Out of the seven ecommerce deals announced last month, five involve niche plays — magazines estore Magzter, personalized gifting portals Giftcart and Engrave, women’s ethnic wear etailer Cbazaar and kidswear etailer Unamia.
