Niche boutique Kanella’s to close after 30 years on Fourth Avenue

Kanella’s, which sells rockabilly, biker and other specialty
clothing on North Fourth Avenue, is liquidating its inventory and
will soon close its doors.

Kanella Conklin, who owns the store with her husband, Steve,
opened it in 1982 and it evolved from a resale boutique to one that
sells hard-to-find, niche brands.

The lease on the store, which is on Fourth Avenue just north of
East Eighth Street, expires at the end of March and Conklin said
she has no plans to renew it. Until then, all merchandise in the
store is 50 percent off, she said.

Conklin said business has been good, but she and her husband
plan on splitting their time between Tucson and a home they
purchased in Bozeman, Mont.

“After 30 years we’ve been doing this, it just might be time,”
Conklin said.

While affected by economic downturn, Kanella’s – like other
stores on North Fourth Avenue – weathered the recession fairly
well, Conklin said. “Maybe because we’re smaller stores and our
customers are really loyal,” she said.
