A tiny new boutique nestled in downtown Exeter boasts walls filled with colorful yarn and fiber just waiting to be turned into a piece of wearable art.
Knit Together is not only a place to buy unique yarn from around the world, including some locally grown fiber and dyed yarn, but it’s also a place to sit down with friends to knit or crochet, said owner Karlyn Dunn.
“My grandmother always said, ‘When you give someone something you knitted or crocheted, you’ve touched every inch of that yarn,’” Dunn recalled as she surveyed her new business.
The store has been open for just a few weeks but word is traveling fast through the fiber world. Dunn said there aren’t any other businesses in Tulare County that sell the array of yarns available at Knit Together, which includes products from
South America, Japan and independent producers in the United States. She’s also collaborating with companies geared to help others, such as Frog Tree Yarns, a not-for-profit fair trade and eco-friendly company.
Local fiber producers such as Tulare County’s Dutch Girl Fiber Arts, which harvests alpaca wool, and Squaw Valley’s Foothill Fiber Farms, are gaining visibility via Knit Together, Dunn said.
“They help me, I help them,” she said.
There’s even yarn dyed specifically for the shop, in vibrant colors such as the “Hot Exeter Nights” that can only be found at the store. And, of course, the store is stocked with knitting needles, crochet hooks, buttons and other accessories to go along with the crafts.
For the dedicated artist, Knit Together also carries weaving looms, weaving combs and threads and Ladybug brand spinning wheels. The fibers she sells are a boon to crafters who spin, Dunn said.
“A lot of us spin, too, and there was no place to go and feel the fibers. We were ordering everything on-line. Those of us who spend a month working on something want more to choose from,” she said.
Knitting classes are also quickly becoming a part of the boutique’s business, and Dunn plans in January to start offering those classes for adults and children on a regular basis.
